What is the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)?

OCIA is a spiritual process through which non-baptized men and women, as well as baptized non-Catholics, and non-confirmed Catholic enter fully in the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer, and rites at Mass. Non baptized in the OCIA are known as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and/or the Holy Eucharist.

An unbaptized person may wish to explore becoming a Catholic. Every year, a group of adults gather to begin that process. They meet regularly with lay leaders and priests. The group (known as the Catechumens) moves in stages or steps toward Lent and the Easter Vigil when Baptism is celebrated.

Someone baptized in a Christian tradition may now wish to become Catholic. A group receives instruction, guidance, and support. Reception into the church usually also takes place at the Easter Vigil.

Baptized Catholics frequently discover they need to complete their “Sacraments of initiation”, that is, Holy Eucharist or Confirmation. They are invited to join the OCIA as well.

HOW OFTEN DOES OCIA MEET?

The Team and Candidates meet twice a month for 90 minutes. At each meeting we discuss themes inspired by the Catechism focusing on the Scripture and Tradition. In addition, once a month, the Candidates meet for half an hour after the Homily of the 10:00 AM Mass to reflect on the scripture of that day.

WHO LEADS THE MEETING?

A member of the OCIA team, composed of Saint Helen parishioners and frequently a priest (our spiritual Director) leads the Particular session. In addition, each Candidate will select a sponsor who act as a guide and inspiration during this faith journey.

WHEN DO CANDIDATES RECEIVE THE SACRAMENTS?

Traditionally, at the Easter vigil (the 8:00 PM Saturday night celebration before Easter).
