Msgr. Tom’s Weekly Note – 5/17/24

Happy Mother’s Day!

My best wishes and blessings go out to all our mothers. Together, let us celebrate and pray for our mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, godmothers, and all those very special women who have played roles as mothers to us, both living and deceased.

Every year, as Mother’s Day would approach, my mother would always say “Please do not buy me anything!” Well, while my mom was strong willed and even a bit strict as I was growing up, there were times like these when I must admit I just didn’t listen to her.

I always wanted to express my love and admiration for her in some special way. Be it flowers or a small gift. It is so important that we do what we can to let our mothers know how special they are.

One Mother’s Day when I was very little, I realized I didn’t have anything to give my mother. I didn’t know what to do. I only had a dollar and knew that wouldn’t get me much.

So, I thought and thought and then finally had an idea: I’d give her the small glass paperweight with the quote, “Smile God loves you” I received for my First Communion. Then I thought, well, that’s not enough.

I took the dollar I had, folded it in half and taped it to the back of the paperweight and gave it to her. She loved it! When I was cleaning out my mother’s house after she died, I found the paperweight in her room…with the dollar still taped to the back of it.

I cherish all the time my mother was here to celebrate Mother’s Day. Let us cherish our moms who are here as well as those that are no longer with us. Let us honor and appreciate them always.

God Bless You all,

Msgr. Tom
